Kei Mouth – Wild Coast

Wild Coast

The small village of Kei Mouth is situated just along the Wild Coast of South Africa on the banks of the Kei River where it enters the Indian Ocean not far from East London. This charming little spot together with its nearby neighbor Morgan’s Bay have not yet been fully discovered by tourists. It is still possible, outside of the main holiday seasons such as Christmas and Easter, to enjoy a calm, serene and inexpensive vacation.

The unspoilt sandy beaches are edged by sand dunes covered by indigenous vegetation and it is from here that the “Strandloper Trail” starts and keen walkers can enjoy the unspoilt beaches and scenery that leads all the way to Gonubie close to East London, a hike that takes up to 5 days to complete.

From Kei Mouth there is a pontoon-ferry that can transport you and your vehicle across the great Kei River to Coffee Bay or to the nearby famous geographical wonder the “Hole in the Wall”. Coffee Bay itself is a charming village with stunning swimming beaches, first-rate fishing and spectacular hikes.

Morgan Bay is often described as an East Cape Coast paradise and this beautiful area along the coast is very close to Kei River mouth and only an hour from East London. It is not at all surprising that this really picturesque part of the coast with its spectacular rugged cliffs is part of the Wild Coast.

The approximately mile long  sandy beach at Morgan Bay is popular with Beachcombers searching for Carnelian beads and sometimes an odd piece of Ming China is found as this is the area where the ship Santa Esporita is believed to have been wrecked.

There is accommodation of various types available at all the above three locations mentioned.
