Overberg Region – Breadbasket of the Cape

The region of the Overberg in the Cape Province of South Africa is known mainly for agriculture, but also encompasses areas of magnificent scenery, beautiful coastline and interesting places. The area lies over the Hottentots-Holland Mountains between the Cape Peninsula and the Cape Garden Route and includes Cape Agulhas which is where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean officially meet. While touring Cape Agulhas, visit the interesting museum at the Lighthouse which is the oldest working lighthouse in South Africa.

The Overberg region is known as the breadbasket of the Cape Province with huge grain fields, and the apple orchards of the Elgin Valley which is one of the main apple growing regions in South Africa.

The Overberg boasts an extremely interesting coastline which includes the popular holiday resort of Hermanus which is regarded as the Whale watching capital of the world. Also stop at Betty’s Bay where you can visit Stoney Point to view the breeding colony of the Jackass Penguin and possibly spot a whale or two swimming in the ocean.

Touring through the towns of Barrydale, Elgin and Villiersdorp visitors will be following the Overberg fruit route. Wine is also a product of other villages such as Bot Rivier and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley amongst others. The Kogelberg Nature Reserve, the De Hoop Nature Reserve and the Harold Potter Botanical Gardens are also interesting and beautiful places to visit.

The town of Caledon is regarded as the Capital of the Overberg and is well known for its Hot Springs originally found by the Khoi-Khoi people and much later European Settlers who recognized the healing properties of the iron rich water in the springs which are free of any organic matter.

Accommodation in practically all areas of the Overberg is of a high standard and there is a plentiful choice with hotels, Guest Houses, B&B’s and camping facilities to suit all visitors’ requirements.
