Tour the Wine Routes 1

One of the most popular attractions while visiting the Cape is the wine routes of South Africa. The Western Cape is the main grape growing region in South Africa due to the ideal weather conditions.

The oldest of the wine routes of South Africa is the Stellenbosch Wine Route and is considered to be the most exceptional in the Country. The cellars can be found along the four main roads going into Stellenbosch. Representing over 300 wineries it is so large that in order to make it uncomplicated to travel through it has been split into four secondary routes –  Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, Bottelary Hills, Helderberg and Devon Valley. Tour these fine wineries, visit the cellars and taste the wine produced there and have lunch at one of the fine restaurants. While touring the area, stop in and visit many of the attractions in the town including the Burgerhuis Museum, The Oude Meester Brandy Museum as well as the Botanical Gardens on the University of Stellenbosch’s campus.

The Constantia wine route’s wine producers have existed since the 1600’s. The first farm was developed by Simon van der Stel. The scenery in the Constantia valley is magnificent with rows and rows of vineyards extending up the mountain slopes. One of the most elegant buildings is at Groot Constantia which was the first wine estate in South Africa. Tour through the Cape Dutch style manor house with its elegant antique furnishings, visit the Wine Museum with its engaging displays and sample the wines produced there.

The Durbanville Wine Route consists of a number of wineries. Each cellar is unique, producing a wide range of wines. While touring in the area don’t forget to check out the other attractions like the game lodge, the horse racing track and sky gliding.
