South African’s love their meat and the barbeque (or braai as it is called in South Africa) is very popular and is part of the heritage of the country.. South Africa even has a “National Braai Day” which is celebrated every year on the public holiday – Heritage day.
Having a “braai” in South Africa consists of certain social traditions. The men always do the cooking. They stand around the fire, drinking beer and cook the meat while the women prepare everything that goes with it including salads and pap.
A selection of meat is usually cooked at a braai including steak, boerewors, chicken and pork and lamb chops. One of the more popular dishes to prepare to cook on the braai is Sosaties (Dutch Kabobs) made from Lamb.
