Harrismith


Harrismith in South Africa is one of the larger towns in the Free State and is named after its founder, Governer Harry Smith. There are a number of interesting sites to see and activities available here including water sports and trout fishing. Visit the Wildflower gardens and stop for a picnic amongst the beautiful and colorful flora.

While on your South African vacation and travelling through the Free State, there are a number of Interesting sites near Harrismith to visit including the Basotho Cultural Village tucked away in the center of the Qwaqwa National Park.  Here one can experience firsthand the habits and way-of life of the African Basotho tribe. There is also the Mount Everest Game Reserve with sandstone crags for climbers and hikers to enjoy. There are campsites to stay at in the reserve.

The Sterkfontein Dam reserve is another appealing location while visiting this area of South Africa. The scenery is exceptional and a number of wildlife and birds can be found here, including Eagles, vultures and the bald Ibis. For those interested in hiking there is a wonderful trail has been created. The dam is ideal for those who enjoy water sports and sailing is very popular amongst South Africans holidaying in the area.

While touring South Africa, Harrismith is the perfect place to stop, slow down and take a few days to relax, play a round of golf, do some bird watching or just relax in the picnic spots or at the dam. Stroll around the crafts markets and wander past the historical buildings. Right next to the town hall is the Deborah Retief Garden where memorials can be seen honoring the men and women who fought in the Boer War.
