South Africa is a country of remarkable diversity, offering everything from dramatic coastlines and wildlife safaris to vibrant cities, historic towns, and rich cultural experiences. To help visitors explore the country more easily, South Africa is today divided into nine provinces, each with its own landscapes, attractions, and unique character.

South Africa’s Nine Provinces

Cape Provinces 

Eastern Cape
A region of wild coastlines, rolling hills, and historic towns. It is the birthplace of Nelson Mandela and home to beautiful areas such as the Wild Coast and Addo Elephant National Park.

Northern Cape
South Africa’s largest and least populated province, known for vast open spaces, dramatic desert landscapes, the Kalahari, and spectacular spring wildflower displays.

Western Cape
Home to Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities, as well as the Cape Winelands, the Garden Route, and the stunning Cape Peninsula.

Free State
Located in the heart of the country, the Free State is known for wide plains, farmland, and charming towns. Its capital, Bloemfontein, is one of South Africa’s judicial capitals.

Gauteng
The economic hub of South Africa. Gauteng includes Johannesburg, Pretoria, Soweto, and surrounding areas, offering world-class museums, vibrant culture, and important historical sites.

KwaZulu-Natal
A province of warm beaches, lush valleys, and Zulu culture. Highlights include Durban, the Drakensberg Mountains, and spectacular wildlife reserves.

Limpopo
A land of ancient history and wildlife, Limpopo borders Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique and includes areas near Kruger National Park and the fascinating Mapungubwe World Heritage Site.

Mpumalanga
Known for dramatic scenery and world-class safari experiences. Attractions include Kruger National Park, Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, and the Panorama Route.

North West
Home to the famous Sun City Resort, Pilanesberg National Park, and fascinating cultural and historical sites.

The Four Historic Provinces

Before 1994, South Africa was divided into four main provinces:

• Cape Province
• Natal
• Transvaal
• Orange Free State

While the country is now officially organized into the nine provinces listed above, many people are still familiar with the older provincial names.
