The Royal Natal National Park is located in the heart of the Drakensberg Mountains and is part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site in the province of KwaZulu Natal.
The park is famous for its impressive scenic beauty and amazing mountain trails that are a delight for walkers and hikers as well as riders on horseback.
A comprehensive guide book of trails can be purchased at the main entrance gate for visitors. There are a number of trails to chose from including short trails that take approximately an hour or long trails that can take from half to a full day. There is also the two day Mont-aux-Sources trail. Whether the walks are gentle or challenging there is something to suit everyone’s ability.
Other activities are Trout fishing in the Park at two dams and rivers, and picnicking and swimming in sparkling mountain streams.
Amidst all the magnificent mountain scenery the main feature is without doubt the world renowned Amphitheatre. This is a rock wall approximately 500 meters high and 5 km long towered over by the Mont-aux Sources Peak, the place where the Orange River begins its long journey across South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean. An amazing site to see is the Tugela River forming one of the highest waterfalls in the world as it cascades down the face of the Amphitheatre on its journey eastwards to the Indian Ocean.
Accommodation within the Royal Natal National Park and also surrounding areas is varied with Self catering bungalows and chalets and a luxury mountain Lodge resort as well as luxury hotels.
