The charming little town of Tzaneen is situated in the foothills of the Wolkberg Mountains in the Limpopo Province (formerly the Northern Transvaal) of South Africa. Tzaneen is the second largest town in the Mopani district of Limpopo and is seen as the capital of the Letaba region.
The climate of the Letaba region is subtropical. The attractive little garden town of Tzaneen where subtropical plants and orchids grow in abundance is the perfect starting point for exploration of the surrounding areas, which include the Magoebaskloof mountain areas and the Letaba river valley. Tzaneen is also only about an houraway from the Phalaborwa Gate of the Kruger National Park and also the Timbavati Game Reserve known as being the home of the White Lions.
The area around Tzaneen is home to very many extremely prosperous farms growing all kinds of subtropical fruit as well as nuts including Pecan and Macadamia. This is also the only tea growing area in South Africa.
There are many attractive and interesting places around Tzaneen and a drive through the Magoebaskloof Mountains with its dense green rainforests and crystal clear mountain streams with lovely waterfalls is most worthwhile.
Another place to visit in the Magoebaskloof Mountains is the scenic gold digger town of Haenertsburg which was founded during the 1887 Gold Rush. About 17 km from Tzaneen and north-east of the pretty town of Duiwelskloof is the Modjadji Cycad Reserve, which has some of the oldest and largest Cycad specimens on earth. There are also a number of game parks and reserves within easy reach.
The area of Tzaneen in the Limpopo province of South Africa is where the Sotho and Shangaan (Tsonga) people originated and there is a living Museum on the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve not far from Tzaneen which shows their lifestyles and ethnic cultures.
Accommodation is plentiful and varied with some lovely Lodges, Guest Houses, B&B’s and Hotels to suit all tastes and budgets.
