Zimbabwe – Southern Africa

Zimbabwe, one of Southern Africa’s most beautiful countries, borders South Africa in the North. This landlocked country has derived its name from a long past capital called “Great Zimbabwe.” The ancient stone structures that remain are the largest in Africa, except for the Egyptian Pyramids.

The country itself has been suffering from difficult political times. Despite a gradually improving economy and political situation, a large portion of the population still requires food aid and suffers from various diseases. However, even though Zimbabweans have been forced to sacrifice a great deal, their natural friendliness and humor shine through all their difficulties. Visitors to the country can expect to receive royal treatment, especially because their support is deeply appreciated and much needed.

There is a great deal to see and experience when touring in Zimbabwe. Still, without doubt, the top attraction is the magnificent, spectacular, mighty Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-tunya, meaning the smoke that thunders), which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It has been protected from commercialization and is one of five World Heritage Sites in the country.

The other four UNESCO World Heritage sites in Zimbabwe are:-

The Great Zimbabwe National Monument.  The ruins of Great Zimbabwe built between the 11th and 15th centuries are a testament to the Shona Civilization. Legend has it that this was the Queen of Sheba’s capital.

The Matobo Hills, South of Bulawayo, contains the Rhodes Matopos National Park made up of an abundance of unique granite rocks and huge boulders. It is here that the monument to the Shangani Patrol has been placed and where Cecil Rhodes, as well as Leander Starr Jameson and all the members of the Shangani Patrol, who were killed in the First Matabele War, are buried.

The 4th and 5th World Heritage Sites are the Mana Pools National Park and The Khami Ruins National Monument; this is an ancient mystifying place not far from Bulawayo, identified as the 13th century capital of the Rosvi-Mambo dynasty.

The capital city of Zimbabwe is Harare – formerly known as Salisbury. Harare is the trade center of Zimbabwe and is also home to the University of Zimbabwe.

There are wonderful Game reserves throughout Zimbabwe with examples of all types of African wildlife and birds.

Accommodation is varied and plentiful to suit all budgets.
